Literacy

In Literacy, pupils are actively involved in reading, viewing, writing, comparing and talking about texts. Pupils are encouraged to explore and engage with a range of literature, everyday and media texts from their own and different cultures, to take pleasure in using texts to explore ideas and to critically think about their world and the community.

During Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) pupils learn to speak confidently and listen to what others have to say. They begin to read and write independently and they use language to explore their own experiences and imaginary worlds.

During Key Stage 2 (Years 3, 4, 5 & 6) pupils learn to change the way they speak and write to suit different situations, purposes and audiences. They read a range of texts and respond to different layers of meaning in them. They explore the use of language in literary and non-literary texts and learn how language works.
